Landscape-Based Soundscape Design: Principles, Strategies, and International Applications
Işıl Kaymaz, Zeliha Irmak Bilir, Nazlıcan KöseSoundscape has emerged as an important dimension of landscape architecture, extending design beyond conventional noise control toward the consideration of acoustic comfort, human perception, and ecological processes. This chapter examines how soundscape principles can be integrated into landscape planning and design. The literature review synthesizes evidence on vegetation, water, landform, spatial configuration, materials, human activities, and interactive technologies, considering their roles in attenuation, masking, sound generation, and interaction. Selected projects illustrate how these principles operate across different landscape contexts and reveal recurring intervention patterns that combine acoustic objectives with ecological, spatial, and experiential functions. Based on the literature and cross-case synthesis, the chapter proposes a landscape-based soundscape design framework linking landscape design elements with soundscape mechanisms, perceptual outcomes, and broader environmental, social, and cultural benefits.
