Jupiter’s Rise and Reset: Navigating the Neobanking Frontier

Divya Soni, Prakash Singh

This case study explores the journey of Jupiter, a neobanking platform founded by Jitendra Gupta in 2019 with the ambitious vision of transforming the traditional banking experience in India. It traces Jupiter’s evolution from launching innovative financial products as a fintech disruptor to navigating the complex regulatory landscape that governs financial services in an emerging economy. Despite the vast opportunity presented by India’s large and underserved population, Jupiter faced persistent regulatory hurdles that challenged the scalability and profitability of its neobanking model. In response to these constraints, the company applied for a non-banking financial company licence from the Reserve Bank of India, marking a strategic pivot toward more traditional banking operations. This sectoral shift, however, was not without its costs. The case delves into the regulatory pressures, compliance burdens, and operational trade-offs that accompanied Jupiter’s transition. Ultimately, it illustrates a classic example of mission drift: a fintech startup originally designed to challenge conventional banking norms, gradually integrating into the very system it sought to disrupt.
