JOY

Alda M. Blakeney-Wright

Abstract

This chapter explores the profound evolution of JOY, tracing its origins from intentional gratitude to a deep-seated spiritual resilience. The author’s journey begins with a conscious practice of being thankful for “little things,” such as physical health and simple daily functions. However, the narrative shifts when personal crisis—a sudden divorce—challenges this foundation. Through this hardship, the author distinguishes between happiness, which is viewed as circumstantial and a personal responsibility, and JOY, which is described as a “deep well in the soul” rooted in a peace that surpasses understanding.

The text further examines various conduits for JOY, including the freedom found in authentic self-discovery, the unconditional faithfulness of pets, and the pursuit of knowledge intended for the collective good. Memory also plays a vital role; a childhood experience with honeycomb serves as a bridge to present-day JOY, illustrating that gratitude for the past can sustain the spirit decades later. Ultimately, this chapter posits that JOY is an unshakeable state attained by shedding worldly expectations and maintaining focus on spiritual growth and the “possibilities of good.”
