Journal Metrics, Scholarly Impact and Interdisciplinary Research: On the Folly of Measuring A While Hoping to Measure B

Abstract

Most business schools claim to value interdisciplinary and impactful scholarship, yet they reward publications in high‐impact‐factor journals and lists exclusively, measuring one thing while hoping for another. Drawing on management theories and research, I describe 14 problems and associated solutions for defining, measuring, rewarding and enhancing diverse portfolios of meaningful scholarly contributions and impact across multiple stakeholders.
