Jean Hyrcan : un tournant « séculier » en Judée au ii e siècle av. J.-C. ?

Michaël Girardin

Because he maintained close relations with the Seleucid court, hired mercenaries and quarrelled with the Pharisees, the ethnarch John Hyrcanus is regularly presented as a "secular" turning point in Hasmonean history. This paper examines all the available documentation to demonstrate that it was as high priest that he governed the Jews and that his policies were fully in keeping with the legacy of the Maccabees.
