Italy in the European energy transition: the role of hydrogen

Francesco Gabrielli
Focusing on Italy, this chapter evaluates the country’s strategic position within the emerging European hydrogen landscape. It examines prospective hydrogen supply corridors linking Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa, highlighting Italy’s potential role as both importer and transit hub due to its geography and extensive gas infrastructure. The chapter reviews national policy developments, including energy and climate plans, recovery programmes, and the Italian Hydrogen Strategy. It argues that Italy could significantly contribute to EU decarbonisation targets while enhancing energy security, provided that investment, regulatory clarity, and international cooperation advance in parallel.
