Issues Particularly Affecting Women
Susan C MappAbstract
This chapter discusses issues that affect women around the world due to their societal gender role, such as access to education, sex-selective abortion, female genital cutting, early marriage, honor killings, maternal mortality, and intimate partner violence. It examines laws and norms within specific countries that affect these issues, as well as the impact of U.S. policy on them. The positive relationship between national development and women’s rights is explained, with the benefits and limitations of microfinance as an example. The Country Profile examines the United States’ low international ranking on women’s bodily integrity, which includes gender-based violence and access to reproductive rights.
