Is YouTube Qualified as an Information Source for Dental Sealants?
Dilek Özge Yılmaz, Nilüfer Üstün, Derya Tabakçılar, Özge Bektaş, Munevver Kılıç Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the content and information quality of YouTube videos that dentists used to provide visual explanations to patients and parents about fissure sealants or recommended to provide information to patients. Methods: 537 videos were screened for the search term ‘dental sealant’ and 126 videos that met the inclusion criteria were selected for analysis. The duration of each video and the number of views, likes/dislikes, comments, the interaction index, the viewing rate and days since the videos were uploaded were recorded. The reliability and quality of the videos were evaluated by video content evaluation tools: Video information and Quality Index (VIQI) for quality and DISCERN for reliability. The statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U and Spearman correlation tests. Results: It seems that there was no significant difference between videos with low/moderate and high total content score in terms of various factors such as number of views, days since upload, number of comments, number of likes, number of dislikes, viewing rate, interaction index, and video power index values (P>.05). However, it was found that the video duration values of videos with high total content score were longer than those of videos with low/moderate total content score (P=.001). It was determined that the flow of information, information accuracy, quality, precision and VIQI total score values of videos with high total content score were greater than those of videos with low/moderate total content score (P<.001, P<.001, P=.004, P<.001, P<.001, respectively). Conclusion: YouTube may provide useful information on dental treatments such as dental sealants. However, due to the lack of control over the quality and accuracy of uploaded content, patients and dental professionals should exercise caution. Keywords: Caries prevention, dental hygiene, dental sealant, pit and fissure sealants, YouTube.
