Investigation of different manufacturing procedures for shaping inorganic molds for light metal casting
Janna Link, Alexander Wetzel, Aaron Gruhs, Bernhard MiddendorfAbstract
Casting is the main process that is used for shape forming of metals. As an alternative to the already existing steel molds, molds for light metal casting are fabricated from inorganic binders. In order to withstand the high thermal (700°C) and mechanical stresses that arise during the casting process, a material specially tailored to this application is required. Alkali‐activated materials (AAM) have demonstrated excellent resistance to thermal stress in the past. Two different forms of the manufacturing process have been explored – direct casting of the AAM‐mold or milling of the casting geometry from a raw block of AAM. The influence of compression strength, thermal stability of the material and type of aggregates is investigated.
