Investigating the Determinants of Student Stress and Adaptive Coping Methods

As the society is becoming complex the problem of stress is increasing. Students are more likely to feel stressed or overwhelmed especially during their college years. Stress experienced by college students is multi-factorial and can be attributed to a variety of contributing factors. The present study was therefore conducted in Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab to identify the various stressors and assess the extent of stress experienced by university students and to examine the coping strategies adopted by them. A self-structured Google form was created to collect relevant information from the respondents and a total of 140 responses were received. Results revealed that majority of the respondents “sometimes” felt academic stress, stress due to lack of strong social support, stress due to family situation, physical and psychological stress. Majority (82.85%) of the students attended counselling sessions when needed to overcome the stress.
