Abstract

Background:

Although the occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after cardiac and thoracic surgery is common and leads to serious complications such as patients’ vital organ dysfunction, pulmonary edema, myocardial infarction, and death, evidence about the occurrence and risk factors associated with post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) as new AF immediately after non-cardiac thoracic surgery is limited. Therefore, the present study aimed at investigating the factors related to the occurrence of POAF after non-cardiothoracic surgery.

Materials and Methods:

The present retrospective study was conducted on 272 patients undergoing non-cardiothoracic surgeries during 2007-2020. Patients’ basic and clinical information including age, sex, BMI, addiction, comorbidities, history of non-cardiac thoracic surgery, history of cardiac surgery, history of chronic kidney disease (CKD), history of ischemic heart disease (IHD), history of heart failure (HF), valvular heart disease (VHD), and the occurrence or non-occurrence of POAF was extracted from their records and then documented.

Results:

In the present study, 48.1% and 51.9% of patients were with and without POAF, respectively. Risk factors associated with increasing the odds of POAF occurrence included age (OR = 1.094), anemia (OR = 3.947), IHD (OR = 4.23), CKD (OR = 4.765), VHD (OR = 4.781), pulmonary diseases (OR = 7.828), hypertension (HTN) (OR = 8.336), HF (OR = 11.790), and post-thoracic surgery (OR = 49.072) ( P -value < 0.05).

Conclusion:

According to the results of the present study, aging, comorbidities (i.e., anemia, pulmonary diseases, HTN, and CKD), heart diseases (i.e., IHD, VHD, and HF), and post-thoracic surgery were among the most significant risk factors associated with the increased occurrence of POAF.
