Introduction to CEN/TS 19102 – Design of tensioned membrane structures

Marijke Mollaert, Bernd Stimpfle

Abstract

The design of membrane structures is often an iterative process that considers prestress, initial geometry, and the effect of loading on stresses and deflections. After more than 50 years of implementing modern ‘textile architecture’, the industry desired a comprehensive European design code to provide verification techniques representing the latest advances in technology, common design approaches, and a harmonised safety level. Within CEN/TC 250 ‘Structural Eurocodes’, Working Group 5 Membrane Structures was formed with the aim of creating the corresponding design code. Currently, CEN/TS 19102 ‘Design of tensioned membrane structures’ is being converted into the Eurocode part prEN19102.

This paper emphasises the importance of an integrated design approach. It illustrates the application of CEN/TS 19102 using the Costa Diadema canopy as an example. It also considers the role of execution rules. These execution rules ensure that the built membrane structure conforms to the designed structure in terms of stress, geometry and structural behaviour.
