Abstract

This special issue for FATIMA (Fog And Turbulence In Marine Atmosphere) includes an array of studies performed from 2021 to 2026, as well as extensive studies that are still in progress and will be reported in future papers. Despite decades of fog research, operational prediction of the lifecycle of fog, especially the intensity of fog (e.g., visibility) continues to lag behind the predictability of high‐impact weather phenomena such as intense rain or heat waves, with palpable implications in marine operations, aviation safety, optical systems, forecasting, road transportation, forestry and agriculture, and energy systems. We hope the papers collected in this special FATIMA issue will stimulate further interdisciplinary research and help develop more reliable fog forecasting tools over marine environments for both scientific and operational communities.
