Intimate Partner Violence, Appeasement, and Women in Higher Education
Nichole E. StanfordAbstract
Highly educated women are at greater risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) than moderately educated women, but IPV literature glosses these statistics. Approximately half or more of all highly educated women experience IPV and, due to public misconceptions, many of these women are not believed and even denied resources. This chapter examines the detrimental effects on women and their careers through the social theories of mate-status value and appeasement to explain the surprisingly high rates of IPV among women in leadership and higher education, offering a qualitative study of an anonymous female professor’s precarious experience.
