Harshwadhani Sharma, Disha Batra, Saket Kumar Bhardwaj

Abstract

The rapid development of generative AI is revolutionizing fields like medicine, economics, and media; it may even disrupt politics and electoral integrity. This article explores how artificial intelligence significantly impacts journalism and newsrooms. It offers an interdisciplinary perspective examining AI’s advantages and challenges in the changing news media landscape. The research focuses on two broad objectives. The article first discusses how AI changes newsrooms and affects news creation, distribution, and organizations themselves. The article also emphasizes how AI affects news media organizations economically and how news consumption is evolving. The article then examines AI’s dual role in promoting and combating disinformation, focusing on news integrity, discussing the impact of AI on news authenticity, the prevalence of fake news, and the effectiveness of AI tools in combating misinformation and disinformation. The analysis employs mixed-methods research to address the objectives. For both objectives, news media professionals were surveyed online, and in-depth interviews were conducted with media industry experts based in Delhi, India.
