Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is an inflammatory disease of the sinonasal tract that significantly impacts quality of life. Novel therapies with monoclonal antibodies brought a paradigm shift to its treatment. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a known mediator of inflammatory pathways and its role in CRSwNP is debatable.
To evaluate the presence of IL-17 in the nasal polyps of patients with CRSwNP compared with subjects with healthy nasal mucosa.
We conducted a systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. The literature search was performed on the PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library. We identified 15 studies with a total of 785 patients with CRSwNP. The levels of IL-17 were increased in nasal polypoid tissue in most of the included studies.
The current study suggests that anti-IL-17 treatments might effectively control CRSwNP. Further studies could assess their safety and efficacy for CRSwNP.
