Intercivilizational dialogue between Russia and Mongolia at the present stage: political, economic and ethnocultural aspects

The purpose of this article is to explore the specific features of intercivilizational dialogue between Russia and Mongolia in an emerging polycentric world. The research methodological framework combines a civilizational approach and social constructivism. The methods used include an analysis of the legal framework, statistical data on economic cooperation, and the results of expert surveys (n=40) conducted in 2024–2025 in Russia (the Republic of Buryatia, the Republic of Kalmykia) and Mongolia. Intercivilizational dialogue allows for the development of a new configuration of regional cooperation, where Russia, Mongolia, and China are viewed as equal civilizations. However, China’s increasing role in Mongolia’s foreign trade highlights the imbalance in our economic ties. According to expert surveys, scholars from our countries have long been linked by strong threads of humanitarian cooperation, and see prospects for intercivilizational dialogue in the development of cultural ties. The findings support the view expressed by a number of experts from the Russian regions and Mongolia who noted that special attention should be paid to the intensification of Russian-Mongolian economic relations.
