Integration of Economic and Sustainability Performance Metrics for Biocatalysis

Application of biocatalysis in industry is becoming increasingly important. In order to speed development, economic and sustainability metrics are useful tools at an early stage in the lab, prior to implementation, so as to benchmark processes as well as guide biocatalyst improvement via enzyme engineering. The rationale for using such tools is explained in this brief review, together with several design concepts.
