Abstract

The 21st century has placed us at a crossroads where several interrelated crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and overconsumption of resources are compelling organizations to change. This chapter explores the role of sustainability leadership and organizational sustainability culture in achievement of ESG excellence through environmental stewardship. It is argued that leadership, culture, and accountability in organizations are the core elements of a system that create synergy, and that companies integrating sustainability at their core can lead the way toward adaptive resilience, thus going beyond compliance. Accountability has been institutionalized in ESGs, but issues of greenwashing, non-aligned metrics, and reporting continue to exist across industries. The innovations and operational efficiencies associated with Industry 6.0 are likely to be introduced, but implementation requires a strong ethical foundation to enable sustainability-oriented, holistic thinking. A key task of policymakers and corporates is to develop inclusive and scalable systems that allow all businesses, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to thrive, thereby establishing an ecosystem where collaborative climate action is feasible in accordance with sustainable development goals. The theoretical framework suggested in the current research, along with insights from global best practices and micro research on Indian MSMEs, addresses a major knowledge gap and unveils new perspectives for future research. The chapter serves as a bridge between theory and practice and offers critical insights across policy guidelines to real-life applications, thereby benefiting business leaders, policymakers, and academia.
