Innovative Renovations of Azteca Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2026: Advancing Tensioned Membrane Design “The Crown”

Andres VILLASEÑOR, Javier RATTIA

Abstract

The renovations of Azteca Stadium in Mexico City for the FIFA World Cup 2026 (Estadio BANORTE) represents a landmark project in the evolution of tensioned membrane structures, aligning with modern demands for sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic innovation.

Our paper will explore the integration of advanced design, modelling, and simulation techniques to enhance dated stadium's iconic roof structures, ensuring compliance with FIFA's stringent requirements while most importantly preserving its cultural heritage. The renovation focuses on a lightweight, highperformance tensioned membrane system to improve aesthetic, spectator comfort, optimize structural efficiency, enhance environmental performance and open the door for commercial partnerships.

Advanced computational tools, including parametric design and finite element analysis, were employed to simulate wind loads, and structural dynamics, ensuring the membrane's resilience under diverse climatic conditions. The project incorporates novel materials, such as high‐strength PVC/PVDF special composites from FPC, selected for their durability, translucency, and recyclability. Sustainability is prioritized using energy‐efficient materials and other systems integrated into the membrane design, reducing the stadium's ecological footprint.

The execution phase leverages prefabrication and modular construction techniques to minimize on‐site waste and accelerate installation, addressing the tight timeline for the 2026 World Cup.

This case study demonstrates how innovative membrane design can transform large‐scale sports venues, offering scalable solutions for future projects. By blending cutting‐edge technology with sustainable practices, the Azteca Stadium renovation sets a precedent for the next generation of tensioned membrane architecture, contributing to the global discourse on adaptive reuse of existing venues while reinventing structural engineering concepts.
