Vinora A, Janaki Bojiah

Abstract

Since time immemorial, the obsession among the young women aged between 15 and 24 to possess a thin body and maintain a zero-size body ideal has been intense. This desire is further intensified by the fashion industry, where from mannequins to models, the size must be zero, and the film industry, which promotes actresses who are zero-sized. The physical activities and varied diets they tend to adopt are not medically recommended for them. They undergo intermittent fasting or random diets without realizing the negative effects they may have on their lifestyle. This obsession and unsupervised measures to achieve the zero size play havoc in the physical and mental well-being of today’s young women, especially in Madurai, which is the focus of this study. The study employs a quantitative (survey-based) research method adopting machine learning (ML) technique to analyze the data as they are accurate in terms of identifying patterns and predicting the decisions. The study is keen to understand the viewpoints of young women aged between 15 and 24 of Madurai with respect to zero-size body ideal, recognize the influencing factors like celebrities opting for liposuctions to possess and maintain skinny, thin body, numerous practices adopted by the young women like varied diets, physical exercises, educate the young women by involving a dietician and a nutritionist to be aware of the importance of ‘being fit’ and recommend a list of lifestyle practices and food habits that can be adopted from the traditional lifestyle to stay fit, which is inclusive of maintaining ideal body mass.
