Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cause 43 million deaths annually worldwide, and cardiovascular disease alone accounts for 20 million of these deaths – more than cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and diabetes combined. Seventy-three per cent of NCD deaths occur in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), making cardiovascular disease as much a health-equity issue as a clinical one. (1). AiSteth, India's first AI-enabled smart stethoscope for cardio-respiratory screening, illustrates how AI is beginning to close this gap. The platform combines a hybrid analogue/digital stethoscope device, a data layer that converts heart sounds into shareable visual waveforms, and a cloud-based AI/ML model that flags normal versus abnormal findings for clinicians, nurses, and allied health workers.
