Incorporating gender perspective in research and teaching content is crucial for fostering inclusive and equitable education in Albanian tertiary education institutions. Despite progress in gender equality, higher education institutions in Albania continue to face challenges in integrating gender-sensitive approaches across various disciplines and research areas. This study examines the extent to which gender perspective and gender issues are incorporated into teaching content and research in Albanian tertiary education. The aim is to examine the status of university courses dealing with gender-related topics and the impact of universities’ Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) on gender mainstreaming in research and teaching content. Using a quantitative data collection method, the study uses a survey of academic staff in four Albanian public universities. Descriptive statistics, graphics, and cross-tabulation of data were used for data analysis and presentation. The study found that despite efforts to implement GEPs in higher education institutions, their influence remains weak, often due to a lack of institutional commitment, faculty training, and continuous monitoring. The study showed no noticeable impact of university GEPs on raising awareness of the inclusion of the gender dimension in research and teaching content. Despite Albanian universities’ approval of GEPs, these plans do not necessarily translate into meaningful curriculum changes or research practices.
