Incidence of Secondary Skin Infections in Children Affected with Chickenpox: A Prospective Observational Study

Background:
Chickenpox (varicella) is a common childhood viral illness that is usually self-limiting; however, it may be complicated by secondary bacterial skin infections, particularly in pediatric populations. These secondary infections contribute significantly to morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and increased healthcare utilization. The present study aims to determine the incidence of secondary skin infections among children affected with chickenpox and to identify associated risk factors.
Methodology:
A descriptive observational study was conducted among children diagnosed with chickenpox over a period of 1 year. Clinical evaluation was performed to identify signs of secondary skin infections, and relevant demographic and clinical data were collected. The incidence of secondary skin infections was calculated, and common bacterial pathogens and clinical outcomes were analyzed.

Early recognition and appropriate management of secondary skin infections are essential to reduce complications. Preventive strategies, including health education and varicella vaccination, play a crucial role in minimizing the incidence and severity of these infections.
