Inbreeding and Outbreeding Depression in the Wild

Inbreeding depression (ID) and outbreeding depression (OD) are becoming increasingly important in wild populations as habitat fragmentation, altered connectivity, and climate-driven range shifts reshape patterns of mating and gene flow. However, much of our understanding of breeding depression comes from captive systems, where mating and environment are controlled and evolutionary dynamics differ from those in nature. Here, I synthesize evidence on how ID and OD manifest in wild populations, emphasizing how behavior, mating systems, environmental stress, and genotype-by-environment interactions shape fitness outcomes. I review classical and genomic approaches for detecting breeding depression in the wild, highlighting both their power and limitations, as well as the importance of long-term genetic and fitness monitoring for detecting delayed or context-dependent effects. Because ID can often be alleviated post hoc, whereas OD is difficult to reverse once introgression spreads, effective conservation requires predictive, evolution-informed strategies that evaluate both the initiation and constraint of gene flow.
