Thanh Chi Hoang, Trung Quan Nguyen, Thi Kim Ly Bui
Background and Aims: Camellia kissi Wall. is mainly distributed in East Asia, including Taiwan, Vietnam, China, and India. This tea belongs to the largest genus of Theaceae, Camellia, which is attractive for its bioactive effects. However, the scientific evidence on C. kissi has still been ignored. Clarifying the potential applications of this tea species will significantly contribute to the conservation of this plant. Methods: The catechin content and anti-proliferation effects of C. kissi were demystified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and cytotoxic MTT assay. Results: The results indicated the anticancer effects on gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS, IC50 = 86.26 ± 16.04 μg/mL), breast cancer (MCF-7, IC50 = 103.30 ± 14.90 μg/mL), hepatoblastoma carcinoma (HCC-J5, IC50 = 175.60 ± 16.30 μg/mL), and lung cancer (A549, IC50 = 160.70 ± 24.20 μg/mL). Catechin (1.06 mg/g) and epicatechin (15.42 mg/g) were detected in C. kissi leaves. Conclusion: C. kissii leaves are rich in catechins (predominantly epicatechin) and exhibit strong antiproliferative activity against various cancer cell lines, notably AGS and MCF-7. This study underlines the therapeutic potential of C. kissii as a valuable candidate for anti-cancer drug discovery and supports its conservation value.
