“In-The-Making” of Antiracist English Education
Alexa OffenhauerAbstract
This chapter explores Janet Miller’s foundational article “English Education in-the-Making” through the lens of antiracist work as expressed in Tema Okun’s “White Supremacy Culture—Still Here,” in which Okun defines white supremacy culture as a widespread ideology that hides and adapts, which allows it to evade resistance. Using a close reading approach that places both texts in conversation with each other, this exploration asks: Does Miller’s insistence of being “always in-the-making” provide an effective framework for combating white supremacy culture as Okun describes it? It concludes that Miller’s framework for being “in-the-making” is useful in resisting white supremacy ideology.
