In situ kidney perfusion: a novel technique for managing intra-operative vascular complications in kidney transplantation – two case reports

Introduction and importance:

Vascular complications during kidney transplantation, such as thrombosis, can impair graft function and often require graft removal and external perfusion.

Case presentation:

We describe an in situ kidney perfusion technique to manage intraoperative arterial and venous thrombosis without removing the graft, which was applied at Viet Duc University Hospital. Two female patients, aged 20 and 58 years, demonstrated successful application of in situ perfusion, with restored graft function and no postoperative complications.

Discussion:

Timely treatment always produces positive outcomes without interfering with the functioning of the transplanted kidney. It is an ideal, quick, and effective solution that eliminates the need to remove the kidney, re-prepare the perfusion table, and increase the use of both staff and supplies.

Conclusion:

In situ perfusion is a safe, effective method to address vascular complications, reducing operative time and preserving graft integrity.
