Implementing young adult‐specific breast cancer supportive care pathways: The right care at the right time
Ciara C. O’Sullivan, Kathryn J. RuddyYoung adult oncology guidelines recommend referring patients to specialists who are skilled in addressing their medical and psychosocial needs, but guideline implementation remains challenging. The single‐institution study by Lommer and colleagues enrolled breast oncology providers, young adult patients with breast cancer, and caregivers to identify priority areas for referrals and their timing. This editorial highlights that sending young adults for too many supportive care consults soon after their cancer diagnosis may add undesirable financial, emotional, and cognitive burden and that clinicians should consider which referrals are needed immediately and which can safely wait.
