Implementing ESG Priorities: Lessons from Hindustan Unilever Limited

Varsha Khattri

With an emphasis on how strong governance frameworks promote sustainable company performance, this chapter explores how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concepts are incorporated into the corporate strategy of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). It examines the ideas that financial success and sustainable growth are correlated, and that board-level supervision is necessary to guarantee that ESG initiatives get enough time and funding. The importance of governance mechanisms – such as integrity frameworks, codes of conduct, and ESG committees in bringing organisational behaviour into line with stakeholder expectations, legal obligations, and ethical standards is emphasised. The importance of company integrity as the cornerstone of corporate behaviour is emphasised throughout the conversation. It describes preventive, investigative, and reactionary strategies that assist businesses in preserving transparency, managing risk, and safeguarding reputational capital. Important rules that address partner accountability, worker safety, diversity, whistleblower protection, and related party transactions are outlined as crucial tools for maintaining operational accountability and discipline. The chapter also emphasises how crucial stakeholder engagement is as a moral and strategic necessity. It demonstrates how cooperation with authorities, trade associations, vendors, and local communities supports a robust, competitive, and socially conscious supply chain. When the wider effects on organisational competitiveness are taken into account, it becomes clear that ESG governance boosts brand trust, ensures long-term value generation, and puts businesses in a position to dominate sustainability rankings.
