Impact of 3D printing on education and research: a multidisciplinary review

This study aims to examine the transformative role of 3D printing (3DP) in education and research, with emphasis on its impact across diverse disciplines, including engineering, management, medicine, science and the arts. Specifically, it explores how 3DP supports hands-on learning, prototype development and research demonstrations while also addressing challenges to its broader adoption.
Design/methodology/approach
The review highlights key 3DP technologies, including fused deposition modeling, selective laser sintering, stereolithography and binder jetting and their role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation and creativity within educational and research contexts. Applications across various academic and professional fields are assessed, alongside key challenges to adoption such as material availability, equipment limitations and the need for specialized technical expertise.
Findings
3DP has helped revolutionize education and research across several disciplines, including engineering, medicine, management, science and the arts. It aids in developing tailor-made teaching materials and helps in the conceptualization of ideas in addition to making communication easier and more understandable. However, challenges like high costs and lack of standardized processes continue to limit its widespread adoption.
Research limitations/implications
This study follows a structured narrative review approach rather than a fully systematic approach following PRISMA guidelines. There is a possibility of publication bias, as the analysis primarily relies on published literature available in selected databases.
Originality/value
This paper highlights 3DP’s potential to make education and research more interactive and adaptable, fostering creativity and innovation. It also identifies the barriers that must be addressed for additive manufacturing to reach its full potential in academic and professional settings.
