Image-guided therapeutic interventions in bone tumors: Primary, alternative, or adjunctive to the conventional treatment?
Dharmendra Kumar Singh, Divesh Jalan, Nishith Kumar, Ashish Rustagi, Puneet Garg, Sonal SaranImage-guided interventions have revolutionized the management of bone tumors by providing minimally invasive therapeutic options that target pain relief, mechanical stability, and local tumor control. This article encapsulates the key concepts highlighting the versatility and potential of image-guided therapeutic techniques in musculoskeletal oncology. In recent years, a resurgence of interest in image-guided therapeutic interventions has been fueled by technological advancements and innovative approaches. Pre-procedural planning is important, involving a comprehensive imaging workup and image-guided biopsy for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Multidisciplinary team discussion plays a pivotal role in decision-making, ensuring optimal patient selection and treatment strategy. These interventions play a crucial role in both benign and malignant bone tumors, offering tailored treatment plans that complement traditional therapies such as chemo-radio-therapy and surgery. Radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, microwave ablation, and chemical ablation are among the techniques discussed, demonstrating efficacy in achieving curative or palliative outcomes. Challenges in standardization and comparison of interventions are acknowledged, including variability in procedural parameters and tumor characteristics. Standardized protocols and comparative studies are needed to optimize treatment outcomes and patient care. Continued advancements in technology and collaborative efforts among multidisciplinary teams will further enhance the efficacy and safety of these interventions, ultimately benefiting patients with bone tumors.
