Gymnema sylvestre : Bioactive constituents, health benefits, and emerging applications in nutraceuticals and functional foods

Abstract

Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) R.Br. ex‐Schult., commonly known as “gurmar” or “sugar destroyer,” belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is traditionally used in Ayurveda for diabetes management. This review synthesizes ethnomedicinal evidence with contemporary pharmacological studies, to evaluate the therapeutic properties and mechanistic actions of G. sylvestre . Databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, were explored, and the findings showed that the plant is rich in bioactive compounds such as gymnemic acids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and saponins, which contribute to diverse biological activities. Experimental findings demonstrate significant antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, renoprotective, neuroprotective, antibacterial, and anti‐obesity effects. Additionally, G. sylvestre shows benefits in gut health regulation, hormonal balance, and as a synergistic component in polyherbal and drug‐herb formulations. Its applications are expanding into functional foods, nutraceuticals, homeopathy, and nanotechnology‐based drug delivery systems. Overall, G. sylvestre holds strong potential as a multifunctional medicinal agent, supporting its integration into modern healthcare systems. However, despite promising outcomes, limitations include variability in phytochemical composition, lack of standardized formulations, and insufficient large‐scale clinical validation. Therefore, future research should focus on well‐designed clinical trials, standardization of extracts, and advanced delivery systems to enhance bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy.
