Identifying NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC Linkages for the Risk for Thrombosis Nursing Diagnosis

Aim

To develop linkages using interoperable standardized nursing terminologies — NANDA-International (NANDA-I), Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), and Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) [NNN] — for the Risk for Thrombosis diagnosis.

Methods

The entire process was supported by a literature review to ensure scientific rigor. A team of six nurse experts with clinical and theoretical knowledge developed the linkages using a multi-step approach. In the first step, outcomes aligned with all components of the nursing diagnosis were categorized. Then, relevant nursing interventions were identified.

Findings

A total of 61 terms were identified for the nursing diagnosis Risk for Thrombosis. These included five core NOC outcomes addressing the occurrence of thrombosis: Risk Control: Thrombus (1932) and Tissue Perfusion: Peripheral (0407), Tissue Perfusion: Pulmonary (0408), Tissue Perfusion: Cardiac (0405), Tissue Perfusion: Cerebral (0406) . In addition, 20 NOC outcomes addressed related risk factors, 11 outcomes were linked to at-risk populations and associated conditions, and 25 NIC interventions were identified as suggested nursing interventions to guide care.

Conclusions

The NNN linkages provide a structured, evidence-based framework to guide nursing care planning in the prevention of the Risk for Thrombosis. These linkages also enable future integration into clinical decision support systems and electronic health records.

Implications for Nursing Practice

The identified NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC linkages represent a valuable, evidence-based resource to guide nurses’ critical thinking in diagnosing Risk for Thrombosis and preventing this serious condition, which can lead to life-threatening events.
