This chapter addresses the unique challenges military veterans face when transitioning to civilian employment, emphasizing the importance of the military mantra “adapt and overcome” in this context. Drawing on extensive research, personal narratives, and decades of military and transition counseling experience, the authors offer key insights and perspectives on transition as a process. The chapter aims to provide practical advice to help veterans align their skills, values, and aspirations with suitable careers while navigating the military to civilian transition. The chapter is divided into three sections: understanding the psychological components of transition, making necessary adjustments, and navigating the cultural shift from military to civilian life. Key strategies include self-reflection, self-assessment, and identifying veteran-inclusive workplaces. The chapter underscores the significance of proactive psychological preparation, continuous self-evaluation, and strategic planning to ensure successful reintegration. Ultimately, it encourages veterans to leverage their military experiences and networks to navigate the transition process successfully.
