ICETETM 25_Experimental Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Fe 500 TMT Bars: a Study on Yield Strength and Impact Toughness
Sardar Shakti SinghThermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars are an integral part of modern-day construction as they possess high tensile strength, ductility, and resistance to seismic forces. This study focused on Fe 500 grade TMT bars obtained from a local supplier in Lucknow and understanding the mechanical behavior under static and dynamic loading conditions. The study is an outcome of studies that included mechanical testing under room temperature in accordance with IS:1757 (Part 2):2020 tensile and Charpy impact tests. The tensile test results show that both samples had yield strengths of 488.0 N/mm² and 470.5 N/mm², and UTS/YS ratios of 1.121 and 1.126 which fell short of the IS:1786 standard requirements. The elongation values were acceptable at 19.92%, and 18.60%. The Charpy impact test results represent a relatively good level of toughness with absorbed energy of 180 J and 162 J respectively, with an average of 171 J, which is better than the normal expectations for Fe 500.The trial-based research shows partial compliance; the samples produced were good in terms of toughness but caused serious concern around their failure in tensile properties and suitability in seismic codes and heavy loading structures. The overall research indicates continued regulation of testing with certified and standard material sourcing, plus full mechanical testing, including compliance in building and engineering. The potential for unsafe construction due to non-compliant reinforcement materials, which put at risk structural integrity, safety and durability, and public trust are a potential outcome. The objective of this study is to evaluate the mechanical performance of Fe 500 TMT bars under static and dynamic loading to determine their suitability for safe construction applications.
