ABSTRACT

This article presents the findings of an international interdisciplinary research project that has collaborated with community groups and museums in Colombia. It proposes that there are potential benefits in rethinking the museum “from below”, using the concept of the museum as a memory prop to work with communities to document, create, curate, and narrate self‐directed representations of their lives and stories. The article describes the implementation of these materials in over 50 museums and community groups in Colombia and beyond, and, selecting some specific examples for illustrative purposes, demonstrates how such materials can be employed to allow communities and museum‐goers to reflect on their pasts and envisage their projects for the future.
