Human–AI Cognitive Division of Labor: A Structured Narrative Review and Integrative Framework

Chen Chen, Guili Li, Shuai Yuan, Qisheng Xu, Chenyang Cai

AI-assisted systems redistribute cognitive work before final decisions are made, yet broad labels such as assistance, automation, and human involvement do not fully describe these arrangements. This theory-led structured narrative review connects Function Allocation with research on complementarity, appropriate reliance, cognitive offloading, delegation, mixed initiative, agency, and recovery. It draws on concept-driven retrieval, citation chaining, and selected theoretical foundations. Source selection and coding were AI-assisted, with verification boundaries reported separately. Framework A is a configuration-oriented integrative reporting framework and design space organized around allocation object, performer, allocation authority, change dynamics, and recovery architecture. Framework B provides a conditional temporal process lens on enactment, monitoring, recovery, and reallocation. Together, they support comparison of configuration descriptions across heterogeneous studies while separating configuration, operating conditions, process, and outcomes. The five dimensions build on established constructs. Coding reproducibility, comparative usefulness, and effects on interface design have not been empirically established.
