How Silicone-Based Inorganic Coatings Help Protect Cultural Heritage and Historical Monuments

Abstract

This article examines alkoxysilane-based inorganic coatings for conserving cultural heritage stone structures, detailing the sol-gel chemistry by which these materials penetrate porous substrates and form durable, breathable siloxane networks. Two case studies—rock formations in Cappadocia, Turkey, and a reproduction of the Kitazawa Sekibō ritual stone in Nagano, Japan—demonstrate that these coatings protect against water infiltration, freeze-thaw damage, and weathering while preserving the original appearance and texture of historical materials. The authors emphasize the coatings' advantages over conventional organic paints, including superior UV and thermal stability, chemical anchoring to mineral substrates, and moisture permeability that prevents internal stress buildup associated with excessive sealing.
