How sex-and gender-based medicine is transforming emergency care
Alyson J. McGregorHow sex-and gender-based medicine is transforming emergency care
Alyson J. McGregor, MD, MA, Associate Dean at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, explores how sex- and gender-based medicine can help drive greater equity from research to the bedside. Emergency medicine is a stress test for the rest of medicine. Every diagnostic assumption, every clinical pathway, every embedded protocol is put to work in real time on patients who cannot wait. When something is missing from the evidence base, the emergency department is where the absence becomes visible. When something is present but unequally applied, such as patterns of care that differ by sex, the emergency department is where the inequality becomes measurable.
