How Israel's October 2023 Attacks on Gaza Were Reflected in British and American Press Headlines: A Comparative Study
Murat Bulut Headlines are the first threshold at which a newspaper's framing of an event becomes visible to the reader. This study examines how the war that began with the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 and Israel's subsequent military operations in Gaza was presented on the front pages of the British and American quality press during the first fifteen days of the conflict. Four newspapers were selected through maximum variation sampling: The Guardian and The Independent in the United Kingdom, and the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune in the United States. The two countries were the most active Western political actors in the conflict, their English-language press supplies much of the international news flow on the Middle East, and their long-standing alliance with Israel makes the tension between national interest and journalistic impartiality observable. Within each country, two titles differing in ownership, editorial tradition and readership were chosen. A total of 57 front pages published between 8 and 22 October 2023 were examined, and the 55 headline news items concerning Gaza were analysed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis on six dimensions: news type, headline quality, semantic clarity, dominant theme, primary news source, and the attitude displayed towards the actors named. The four newspapers were almost identical in coverage frequency but diverged sharply in how that coverage was constructed. Israeli official sources supplied 38.2% of the headline news, whereas Palestinian sources supplied 9.1%. The Independent produced the highest proportion of Israel-favouring headlines, while the Los Angeles Times combined the highest rate of apparent neutrality with the highest rate of semantic opacity, achieved largely through agentless and passive construction. The study shows that editorial position in war reporting is expressed less through openly partisan headlines than through the distribution of sources and the grammatical construction of the headline.
