How bio-based coatings could prevent aircraft icing
Beth McDanielHow bio-based coatings could prevent aircraft icing
Beth McDaniel, President of Reactive Surfaces Ltd., LLP, explores how bio-based coatings could offer a more sustainable way to prevent ice from accumulating on aircraft. Ice has been aviation’s most stubborn adversary since the Wright brothers first coaxed a machine into the sky. It doesn’t care whether the aircraft overhead is a wide-body jumbo, a Black Hawk, a Cessna puttering out of a grass strip, or a drone quietly mapping a farmer’s field. Given the right conditions, ice will happily accumulate on all of them, and it has spent more than a century making pilots, airlines, and defence teams very nervous indeed.
