Hormonal Workup in Different Clinical Severities of Acne Vulgaris Patients

BSTRACT
Background:
The patho-physiologic aspects of sebum and its role in acne formation have been a matter of prolonged debate. However, less attention has been paid to endocrine causes of acne. Hence, the hormonal pathogenesis of acne is well emphasized in this study.
Objective:
This study was taken to determine the hormonal profile in adult patients of acne vulgaris and how strong hormonal factors contribute to the severity.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study includes 200 patients of acne vulgaris (50 patients each in 4 grades) and 50 healthy controls aged between 18 and 45 years. Blood sample was taken for the estimation of serum testosterone, anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), insulin and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA). Conclusion:
This study concluded that patients with acne have higher levels of testosterone, insulin, IGF-1 and AMH. Therefore, to rule out the underlying hormonal abnormalities causing acne vulgaris, patients should be tested for the aforementioned hormones and hormonal therapy can also be used as an adjuvant to early acne treatment.
