Holistic support of patients with breast cancer in primary care
Tanya AndrewesThe impact of breast cancer is multi-faceted and can extend far beyond the period of active cancer treatment, affecting the person physically, psychologically, socially, economically and spiritually. This article identifies ways in which practice nurses can support people with breast cancer throughout their journey, drawing both on the literature and on the personal experience of the author, who is a breast cancer survivor. The role of primary care nurses in providing holistic care at different stages of this process is discussed, alongside opportunities to improve access to primary care-based support for patients, particularly after they have been discharged from secondary care.
