Hitherto Unknown Sexual Morphs and Mating Behavior of Periphyllus allogenes Szelegiewicz (Hemiptera: Aphididae) From South Korea
Minho Lee, Mariusz Kanturski, Seunghwan LeeABSTRACT
Periphyllus allogenes Szelegiewicz, 1981 is an East Asian aphid species recorded from South Korea and Japan. Although the apterous viviparous female was originally described in 1981 and the fundatrix and alate viviparous female were subsequently reported, the sexual morphs have remained unknown. In 2021, oviparous females and males were collected on Acer triflorum during field surveys in South Korea in late autumn. In addition, mating‐associated behavior was observed in colonies containing sexual morphs. In this study, we provide the first descriptions and illustrations of these previously unknown morphs, together with biometric measurements, descriptions, ecological photographs, and biological observations. We also document mating‐associated behavior, providing new insights into the reproductive biology of the genus Periphyllus . The discovery of the sexual generation confirms that P . allogenes has a holocyclic life cycle.
