High‐Valent Copper(III) Compounds: Structural Diversity and Versatile Applications

Vladimir Motornov

Investigating high oxidation states of abundant 3d metals such as copper(III) is key to understanding oxidative systems and unlocking new modes of reactivity in synthetic chemistry. In the recent decade, chemistry of high‐valent copper(III) has emerged from characterization of elusive intermediates to the structurally diverse chemistry of well‐defined complexes with unique chemical properties. Nowadays, copper(III) complexes find broad application in organic synthesis, including late‐stage functionalization of complex organic molecules and biomolecules. Herein, structural diversity of copper(III) complexes, preparative approaches to different copper(III) complexes, predominantly stabilized by pincer, macrocyclic, and trifluoromethyl ligands, and their key synthetic applications are reviewed, with the emphasis on recent advances.
