Higher Education and Sustainable Development Goals 3.1 and 3.2: Case Study Using Artificial Intelligence to Predict Postpartum Haemorrhage
Colleen Kraft, Edith Luhanga, Max Xiao, Ganesh Mani, Vanathi GopalakrishnanThe sustainable development goals (SDGs) offer a framework to improve the lives of global citizens. SDG Target 3.1 seeks to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births, while Target 3.2 aims to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under five years of age, with all countries’ focuses on reducing neonatal and under-five mortalities. While under-five deaths worldwide have declined from 12.6 million in 1990 to 5.2 million in 2019, differences exist in under-five mortality, with the highest rates persisting in the global south. Higher education institutions and their schools of medicine, public health, and public policy play a vital role in achieving the SDGs. This chapter explores examples of university-led initiatives that advance the SDGs, including engaging the voice of the community and youth in project design and implementation; using technology to promote safe maternity, delivery, and early childhood services; and educating women to result in improved infant and under-five child mortality.
