Heterotransplantation of Human Malignant Tumors in “Nude” Thymusless Mice. I. Breeding and Maintenance of “Nude” Mice

B. C. Giovanella, J. S. Stehlin

Summary

A total of 133 “nude” thymusless mice were bred in a sterile environment from heterozygote parents made pathogen-free by prolonged treatment with high concentrations of antibiotics in the drinking water. The “nudes” were maintained under strict pathogen-free conditions. A low mortality rate (5%) and survivals of over 10 months were observed; wasting disease did not occur at any age. Inbreeding was avoided to obtain large litters of robust outbred animals for heterotransplantation of human tumors.
