Herpes simplex virus with a twist: A linear knife-cut ulcer in the immunocompetent

Abstract

The “knife cut sign” in the intertriginous areas is a distinctive presentation of linear erosive herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of a 40-year-old apparently immunocompetent female with an unusual linear erosive variant of HSV genitalis, resembling a “knife cut” ulcer, complicated by secondary bacterial infection. This case emphasizes the need to recognize such uncommon presentations for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, and prevent further complications.
