Helping Them Win on and off the Field: Navigating Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), the Transfer Portal, and Academic Challenges for Supporting First-Generation Black Male Revenue Sport Student-Athletes
Tommy Jackson, Reena Patel-ViswanathAbstract
The concept of intersectionality has caught the attention of many higher education stakeholders. While the majority of research has focused on how race, ethnicity, class, and gender impact student success, little research has been done specifically on first-generation black male college student athletes. This chapter will provide a thorough review of research and statistics in a scaffolded manner to ultimately build a case to support the crucial need and value when implementing the concept of intersectionality when wanting to support the success of black male student athletes who are first-generation college students navigating name, image, and likeness, transfer portal, and the higher education journey.
